Aldenderfer and Núñez provide brief overviews of the cultures in northern Chile, Quilter and Rick look at Peru, and Santoro explores the Puna of northern Chile and southern Peru and Bolivia. Several authors cover topics that explore the evolution of cultural traits within the Archaic. Browman examines the beginnings of pastoralism, Pearsall the rise of plant domestication, and Burger and Salazar-Burger examine the development of ceremonial structures. Other topics covered include specific sites and their surrounding areas, including Asana, Pachamachay, and Pampacancha.
