520 |a The HRAF Early Dynastic Mesopotamia collection consists of 11 documents, all of which cover earlier and later archaeological periods from the Uruk to the Old Babylonian or later. All focus on third millennium BC Mesopotamia, one of the earliest periods for which there is enough evidence to study in detail urbanism, writing, trade, and the evolution of political and social systems. HRAF dates the Early Dynastic tradition to ca. 4900-4334 B.P in absolute dates (ca. 3000-2350 BC, Postgate). Adams (with Wright's contribution as an appendix) uses archaeological surveys to study settlement and irrigation patterns. Crawford and Postgate use textual and archaeological evidence; Postgate's work is slanted towards society and economy, Crawford's is more a cultural study. Kramer's work uses mostly textual evidence for a general study. Gelb, Jacobsen, and Diakonoff analyze texts to study the development of political and social systems; Diakonoff's work is based on Marxist economics. Henrickson examines residential settlements. Pollock reinterprets Woolley's work in the royal cemetery of Ur in the light of scholarship and archaeological evidence postdating Woolley. Kohl examines trade networks between the urban centers of Mesopotamia and the settlements of the Iranian plateau.
