Description
Summary:Summarizes the environment, settlements, economy, and sociopolitical organization of the Cascade Culture of the Columbia River plateau in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Includes five full-text documents that discuss archaeological investigations of the Cascade culture. Articles cover 13,000- 3500 B.P., although the Cascade period is generally defined as occurring between 8000-5000 B.P. Bense and Brauner provide summaries. Bense also examines culture change associated with climate in the Lower Snake River region. Brauner analyzes a house floor site adjacent to the Snake River. Butler defines the Cascade culture, formerly known as the Old Cordilleran, based on the Cascade projectile point. Pavesic reports on excavations from Hells Canyon rockshelter in Oregon, where he identifies two phases in two strata that contain Cascade material and date from 7500 B.P. to 3500 B.P.
