Description
Summary:Belgium created Congo, but did Congo also create Belgium? To what extent was 20th-century Belgium partly shaped by its colony? The leading Congolese historian Isidore Ndaywel asked this question several years ago. This interdisciplinary collection offers an answer. He highlights the influence of the colony on Belgian culture and society, from high to low. Because colonialism is not a one-way street. In Tervuren, at national parades and in classrooms you can see how Congo helped color Belgium. But also in politics, the media and the arts. It is also about the nesting of Congo in the mass culture of mission stories and feature films, in the composition of Belgian families or in the memories of ordinary people of the former colony. The book thus forms a kaleidoscope of the difference that Congo - and the Congolese - made in Belgian history.
