520 8 |a Should corporations advertise during events hosted by regimes stained by human rights violations? The 2022 Beijing Olympics presents a case in point. The lofty rhetoric of the Games stands as a tribute to peace and fellow feeling. However, there are credible allegations of genocide looming in the backdrop. The Chinese Communist Party vehemently denies the allegations, and consumers may ultimately be indifferent to the claims of human rights organizations. But is it worth the risk of potentially tarring the good name of the company by (at least implicitly) aligning itself with the host nation? The willful manipulation of sporting events to launder a reputation is known as sportswashing. In these situations, corporations face a dilemma. Both participation and non-participation carry with them consequences for their profits. This case encourages readers faced with such a scenario to think through the ethics and practical implications of arriving at a sound business decision.
