Untold damage by Gardner McKay.
Depicts a family in the early 1970's dealing with a mentally handicapped teenager who is treated as a baby rather than one more his age, thus forcing the boy to keep any progress in his speech capabilities to himself. The other family members are dealing with their own secrets, as well.
